I don’t care about what other people tell you about melasma.
Here’s the truth: melasma is a hormonal issue and should be treated from the inside. Period.
Unless you spend a lot of time under the sun, the real cause of the patches on your face is your freaking hormones!
There are three known reasons why your skin is uneven right now and they are:
- Pregnancy
- Birth Control
- Menopause
This makes sense and let me tell you why.
Think about the time when you first noticed the uneven patches on your face.
Let me guess….
You noticed it after giving birth, didn’t you?
Or after you started taking birth control?
How about when you started feeling menopausal?
All of these life events caused your hormones (estrogen and progesterone) to start going crazy at high levels.
High levels of estrogen and progesterone = melasma on your face.
Here’s my point: because melasma is a hormonal issue, you should start tackling the problem from the inside and not just on the outside.
Ok fine – you also need to use skincare products (kojic acid, hydroquinone, salicylic acid, etc.) to lighten the appearance of melasma but the main thing is this – you need to start taking oral medications or supplements to put your crazy hormones under control.
I can’t give you advice on what kind of medications you should be taking (ask your doc).
But, I can give you an idea on what supplements may help you (this is not a medical advice though!). Still consult with your doctor.
#1. DIM Supplement
DIM is probably one of the most effective supplements out there that you can use to keep your crazy hormones under control.
Why it works: It keeps your estrogen at a normal level.
What you should be looking for: 350mg of Pure DIM similar to this one.

2. Glutathione
A very popular “skin lightening” supplement in Asia. People who’ve taken this supplement swear that their skin became lighter.
Why it works: Helps lighten dark spots.
What you should be looking for: 500mg of Glutathione like this one.

3. Vitamin B12
Why it works: This supplement helps regulates skin’s pigment production (melanin) and reduces brown spots.
What you should be looking for: 3000mcg of Vitamin B12 like this one.

4. Vitamin C
A potent anti-oxidant.
Why it works: Helps combat oxidative stress, which has been shown to be elevated in patients with melasma.
What you should be looking for: 1650 mg of Vitamin C (get the pure one here).

5. Panthothenic Acid
Why it works: Has anti-inflammatory effects. Inflammation is one of the causes of uneven skin pigmentation.
What you should be looking for: 500 mg per serving of pure panthothenic acid.

Frankly, I don’t know if these supplements will work for you. I wish I have a crystal ball to know the answer but I don’t.
But one thing I can tell you is this – I truly believe that melasma is a hormonal issue and it should be treated from the inside.
Being said that, I hope you give these supplements a chance.
The only thing that you can do right now is to stay open-minded, positive and try something you’ve never tried before.
